Elkhart Police Chief Resigns

Elkhart Mayor Tim Neese has announced the resignation of Police Chief Ed Windbigler. Neese's office says Windbigler announced his immediate resignation yesterday at the request of the mayor. Windbigler served as police chief for about three years after being appoinyted by Neese in Janurary 2016.

In a statement released last night, mayor Neese said, "This was a difficult decision, and after much consideration, I have decided to seek new leadership of the Elkhart Police Department. I appreciate Ed's service to the Elkhart Police Deaprtment, and our community, and wish hime the very best."

Neese suspended Winbigler without pay on November 14th for his handling of an incident where two Elkhart police officiers repeatedly punching a handcuffed man in their custody. He was scheduled to return to work on December 17th.

The mayor's office says Assistant Chief Tom Thayer will continue to serve as interim chief until a replacement for Windbigler has been selected.
