Goshen Bans E-Cigarettes, Smoking In Parks In New Ordinance

The Goshen City Council passed a stricter non-smoking ordinance Tuesday night. It puts vaping on the same level as smoking and bans both in public parks.

Goshen’s new ordinance bans smoking inside all businesses except three bars that have traditionally been smoking, and vape shops.

There were several other suggestions that did not make it into the new ordinance. Some wanted the ban to extend to 15 feet from business entrances, instead of the current 8 feet. Others wanted the ban to include all bars, or all public property and businesses in the city.

Jim McKee is a member of the Goshen City Council. He said when it comes to enforcement, it’s really up the people who spot it. “To some extend ordinances are ‘we hope that you’ll help us do this.’ We don’t have enforcement officers going around doing that.”

The new ordinance take effect immediately. McKee said every administration in recent years has revised the smoking ban, so he expect this to not be the final form.

He said while fewer people are smoking than before, for some changing a lifelong habit will not happen overnight.
