Thousands lose power in Tuesday's storms

Gemma DiCarlo / WVPE Public Radio

Several thousand Michiana residents were left without power following Tuesday’s severe thunderstorms.

As of 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, Indiana Michigan Power had 6,090 customers without power. About half of those customers were in the Three Rivers area, which saw almost 2,900 outages.

Almost 1,600 customers lost power in the Elkhart area and over 1,100 in the Benton Harbor area. I&M did not have an estimate for restoration Tuesday night.

Midwest Energy and Communications had about 750 customers without power Tuesday night. That number had been reduced to “roughly 70” by 4:15 Wednesday morning. NIPSCO had only 10 outages as of 11 a.m. Wednesday.

About 80,000 Consumers Energy customers were affected by Tuesday's storms, with over 30,000 restored by Wednesday morning.
