19 Local Children Adopted For National Adoption Day

Annacaroline Caruso/WVPE News

Friday is National Adoption Day. Several adoptions took place this morning at the St. Joseph Probate Court in celebration.

Families entered the courtroom one after another  some to finalize adoptions with step parents and others to legally adopt their foster kids. Either way, each family walked out feeling a little more complete.

Especially for 24-year-old Rachael Scanlon who adopted a 14-year-old boy she met during her time as a social worker in Tennessee.

“We really bonded when I worked with him in residential. I hope he sees his potential and can now do whatever he wants to do.”

It was Judge Jason Chichowitz’s first time as the sitting probate court judge and he says National Adoption Day is not your average day in court.

“Courts traditionally don’t have all the greatest days, but today everybody walks out with a smile and a laugh on their face.”

19 children were adopted throughout the course of the day.
