State Attorney General Bill Schuette says his office will investigate a possible murder-for-hire plot involving a prison food service worker.
Michigan State Police suspects an Aramark employee of approaching an inmate of an Upper Peninsula prison about having another inmate killed.
The Detroit Free Press first reported the story last week. Now the attorney general’s office says it will launch its own investigation into the incident. It says the local State Police post in Sault Ste. Marie requested the investigation.
“This is a serious allegation. Our team is reviewing the evidence and materials in this case and conducting an independent and thorough investigation,” said Schuette. “We will follow the facts, without fear or favor. If upon conclusion of our investigation we find that legal action is warranted, we will not hesitate to pursue justice.”
Aramark is operating Michigan’s prison food services under a three year, $145 million contract. The state has fined the company twice for incidents including food shortages and employees having sex with inmates.
Democrats say the murder-for-hire plot should be the last straw, demanding that Gov. Rick Snyder cancel the contract.
Snyder says he can’t comment on the case while it’s under investigation.
