Attorney General William Barr's Visit To Notre Dame Sparks Protests

Annacaroline Caruso/WVPE News

A large crowd of activists gathered near Notre Dame Friday evening to protest while U.S. Attorney General William Barr spoke at a private event at the university.

Protestors stood in the rain outside Notre Dame’s gates holding signs which read ‘no one is above the law’ and ‘disbar Barr.’ They blew whistles to voice their unhappiness in the way Barr handled a whistleblower complaint which prompted an impeachment inquiry.

Andrew Cary is a student at Notre Dame and organized the rally. He’s disappointed in the way the university set up the event with Barr.

“If they want to bring diverse viewpoints to campus, I think that’s great, but let us listen. We’re not going to be able to know what he’s saying when it could be very valuable to a lot of students and a lot of the community so I wish they would've opened it up. I wish they wouldn’t have tried to keep it secret.”

Cary also says the protest is a way to show local support for the impeachment inquiry. The private speaking event with Barr was set up by the Notre Dame Law School.
