Two years ago at Kelly’s Pub, 11 victims were shot and one, Brandon Williams, was killed.
His sister Tiara Williams said the last two years have been devastating — but ending gun violence is a way to honor his memory.
“Today is not just about my brother,” Williams said. “Today is about gun violence, period.”
The city announced it will be hosting a memorial event against gun violence in September as part of the national day of remembrance for homicide victims.
It will be a partnership between the city, South Bend Community Schools, Kelly’s Pub, Mamas Against Violence and Justice for Michiana.
In addition, the city is turning the river lights green on Wednesday in remembrance of Williams and other gun violence victims. Common Council member Canneth Lee said the city is not tolerating gun violence.
“We pray that peace will flow through our city like a river,” Lee said. “It’s summertime, and we should be able to be out in our community without being afraid of gun violence coming to our door.”
