Colleges In Michiana Refunding Students After Coronavirus Forces Campuses To Close

College campuses across Michiana have shut down, leaving students to take online classes from home. Some Universities are creating plans to reimburse students for the time they weren’t on campus.

Most students pay for the total cost of housing and meal plans at the beginning of the semester.

The University of Notre Dame is refunding students for the amount of meals and housing they were unable to use since campus closed.

Paul Browne is the Vice President for Public Affairs and Communications for the University of Notre Dame.

“I think it was important to help the students themselves and their families many of whom could be facing difficult times in terms of being laid off from work,” he said.

Browne said the University is still calculating what that refund will be for each student. He said the refund will vary per student depending on what they paid for originally.

Officials from Holy Cross College, St Mary’s College and Indiana University South Bend said they’re also planning to refund students but do not have a set plan in place yet.

UPDATE 3/30/2020:

IUSB plans to apply a prorated housing credit to students accounts. This will first be used to pay any unpaid charges owed to the school. If the credit exceeds the amount due on the student's account, the excess will be refunded during the first week of the Fall 2020 semester. Students can request an earlier refund if they choose.
