Downtown Elkhart Could See New Affordable Housing

WVPE News

More affordable housing could soon become available near downtown Elkhart. The City’s redevelopment commission approved money Tuesday to help a local organization build more affordable homes.

Lacasa is planning on creating a total of eight units for families whose income is 60 percent below the median household income in Elkhart County.

The homes will be on State Street, which is in a historic district near downtown. The commission approved $145,000 to repair the brick street, sidewalk, and replace sewer taps in the neighborhood.

Brad Hunsberger is the vice president of real estate development for Lacasa. He said affordable housing is an important part of any community.

“To have a broad spectrum of housing options that are nice and new and good housing is critical for any downtown and any city to have that diversification of population.”

Hunsberger said they still need approval from the Board of Zoning Appeals and The Historic Commission.

They hope to start construction by the end of this year and have units ready for rent at the end of next summer.
