Elkhart Breaks Ground On $2.75 Million Benham Avenue Construction Project

Annacaroline Caruso / WVPE Public Radio

Elkhart leaders broke ground Wednesday on the Benham Avenue construction project. The goal of this project is to make the area easier to use and safer for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists.

The Benham Avenue construction project is a $2.75 million makeover of a half mile stretch on the South side of Elkhart.

Along with a new road, the sidewalk will be replaced and expanded, there will be a designated bike path on the sidewalk, and the storm sewer pipe and water main will be replaced.

Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson says Benham Avenue is heavily used by both motorists and pedestrians.

“Benham Avenue is a well-used thoroughfare," he says. "We’ll be able to create the kind of safety that’s been necessary for this street for a long time.”

Roberson says this project has been talked about for years and he is glad the City can finally get it started.

Construction is expected to take about six months.
