The Elkhart City Council unanimously approved an ordinance Friday that appropriates $500,000 into an emergency fund for the COVID-19 crisis.

The ordinance also reduces city staff to essential personnel only. Mayor Rod Roberson needs the approval of the council president and to inform the rest of the council before using the emergency funds. He also needs to give the public the opportunity to comment.

Mayor Roberson said some of the funds will most likely be used for equipment to fight the COVID-19 outbreak.

Money from the emergency fund could also be used to provide isolation shelters for the homeless and hiring outside medical services, according to the ordinance.
