Elkhart Co. Sheriff's Office: Man Rushed To Hospital Following Attack By Two Dogs

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office released information via Facebook on a Christmas Day dog attack.

The information is below:

On December 25, 2019 Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to 25093 Berry St. Elkhart, Indiana for a report of two dogs, later determined to be a pit bull and pit bull/lab mix, that had attacked a male in the backyard.

Medics could not access the badly injured male due to being trapped by the dogs in the backyard. The Sheriff’s Deputy attempted to distract the dogs so medical aide could be provided, however, the dogs charged.

The officer was forced to discharge his firearm to protect those on scene, shooting both dogs. One dog died at the scene. The other dog fled the area; later returning to the residence and taken into the custody of the Humane Society of Elkhart County.

The victim, later identified as Billy Shoemaker, 43, Elkhart, Indiana was transported to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
