Many schools across the United States are taking steps to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. Elkhart Community Schools is also preparing.

There are no positive cases of COVID-19 in Elkhart County as of right now.

But Elkhart Community Schools is still making sure it has a plan in place in case of an outbreak.

School officials say in the event Elkhart schools would need to close, they would transition to e-learning days.

Steve Thalheimer, the superintendent of Elkhart Community Schools, said he hopes it doesn’t get to that point.

“Our fingers are crossed that we won’t need that and that we’ll be able to make it to spring break which would allow for some separation but for right now we’re in that pattern of preparing just in case we need to.”

Thalheimer said some other plans they’re considering are setting up different food pick-up sites around the county for students who rely on the school for meals.

He said full-time teachers would be on the clock but they would try to findother jobs for hourly employees so they can still be paid.
