Elkhart County election districts to remain the same

Elkhart County’s local election districts are now set for the next 10 years.

State and local lawmakers are required to redraw districts after every decennial census – but Elkhart County’s council and commissioner districts didn’t actually need redrawing.

At the Board of Commissioners meeting Monday, County Clerk Chris Anderson said the county’s population distribution still falls within the state limits for each district.

“The deviation between the biggest and the smallest of the council districts is 6.93 percent – well below the recommended statutory 10 percent that is set out in Indiana code,” Anderson said.

He said commissioner districts have a higher threshold – 18.93 percent – to account for full-township districts.

“It is a recommendation from the census and from the state that they go full townships,” Anderson said. “That’s how we have our commissioner districts set up – they are full townships, they don’t split a township.”

The county is currently represented by seven council members – three at-large representatives and four district representatives – and three commissioners. All four district council seats and the District 1 Commissioner seat are up for election in 2022.

The commissioners unanimously approved the districts Monday.
