Elkhart Health and Aquatics is opening this week. Officials say the massive facility, especially the pool, is expected to be a regional draw for Elkhart.
Elkhart Health and Aquatics has been in the works for more than four years. It’s now a reality on the site where the Elkhart YMCA used to be.
The new facility is run by Beacon Health. Part of the center is for Beacon Health and Fitness members only. The other part is meant for the community. It houses meeting rooms, a library, and general community spaces.
Pete McCown is the President of the Community Foundation of Elkhart County. He says they’ve come a long way.
“We’re delighted that we’re here. We’re delighted that this facility will open on Thursday. We’re delighted that we’ve made tremendous progress in member enrollment,” McCown says.
The facility has a larger-than-Olympic-sized pool, group and individual fitness areas and on-site sports medicine and physical therapy.
In addition to the community foundation and Beacon, the city, state and Elkhart Community Schools also contributed to the project. The schools will use the spaces for swimming lessons and teams.
The member portions of the center will open Thursday. The community areas are scheduled to open August first.
