Elkhart Community Schools is asking for the community’s help in writing lyrics for the new fight song for the combined high school that students will attend this fall.

Elkhart Memorial and Central High Schools will compete as one set of sports teams next school year.

Because of the merger, there have been a lot of decisions to be made. Last spring the school choose the Lions as the new mascot.

A committee of band directors and students chose Auburn University’s War Eagle for Elkhart’s new fight song. Now, that tune needs lyrics.

Dan Burton is assistant director of bands at Elkhart Central High School.

“Our committee’s going to reconvene and sit down and look at all the lyrics and decide which one kind of reflects the history of our school. Maybe using our new mascot and new colors.”

Submissions are due by January 31st. Burton said once the lyrics are approved and the final copyright comes from Auburn, the song will be arranged by Ken Dye, the director of bands at Notre Dame.

He said they hope to be rehearsing the piece in March.

Submissions can be emailed to Burton at dburton@elkhart.k12.in.us
