The Elkhart Municipal Airport is expected to receive nearly $6 million from the Federal Aviation Administration over the next six years.

The airport already received about $3 million from the FAA.

The additional $6 million will go towards the completion of the airport’s new perimeter fence, runway lighting, and pavement repair.

Dave Pixey is the manager of the Elkhart Municipal Airport.

“My job is to make sure that our airport is accessible to everybody that wants to use it but primarily the business traveler who comes in and out of the Michiana area,” he said.

Pixey said the airport plays an important role in the Elkhart economy.

“There’s a lot of business and commerce that comes through our airport that benefits our community," he said. "A mile of runway is very important in Elkhart to allow us to reach out into the world.”

Pixey estimated the airport has an economic impact of about $220 million on the Elkhart community.
