Elkhart Plans Update to Central Plaza Area

National Register of Historic Places

Elkhart is beginning to make plans to remodel the central plaza area in the city’s downtown.

The central plaza area--which is the Civic Plaza with the clock and Central Park behind it-- has played host to an increasing number of events in recent years, officials say it went from five to more than 50.

Elkhart mayor Tim Neese said as more people spend time downtown with events, the city needs an update.

“It’s time for a facelift or an improvement, specifically on the Civic Plaza. It’s approximately 30 years old and it’s just time to see some changes in the right direction.”

Neese said the final project will be dictated by resident input but it could include a permanent stage, additional lighting and public bathrooms, or any number of other things.

He said they will be asking for public input on the project in a series of meetings this fall. Times and locations for those have not been determined yet.

Neese said a timeline for starting the project, or when they hope to have it finished will be determined by what the improvements end up being.
