Elkhart Public Library to Host Celebration of Bilingual Childhood Literacy

The Elkhart Public Library is hosting a bilingual day of stories, dance and art on Sunday.

El dìa de los libros/El dìa de los niños or just Dìa is a celebration of childhood literacy regardless of language or cultural background. The American Library Association promotes the day annually.

This is the first year the Elkhart Public Library has hosted an event. Sam Householder with the library said it’s a way to bring the diverse communities of the city to the library.

“We really wanna make an effort to reach out to communities that maybe don’t engage with the library as much or, for whatever reason, we haven’t been able to reach in the past.”

There will be story times, book giveaways, a community mural painting, and a dance troupe at the event. Householder said it’s meant to have something for children of all ages.

It runs from 3:30 to 4 p.m. at Studebaker Park in Elkhart on Sunday.
