Elkhart Students Go Back to School, Last Year as Memorial and Central

Indiana Public Media

Thursday is the first day back to school for students in Elkhart. This is the last year high schoolers will belong to different schools.

Next year, students coming back will go to either the Memorial or Central campus of Elkhart High School. Sports teams and music ensembles will be unified. The class of 2021 will hold Elkhart High School diplomas.

The following school year, all 10th through 12th graders will be in the Memorial Campus which will be Elkhart High School. The Central campus from that year forward will be the freshman academy.

Starting in the 2021-2022 school year students will choose career pathways in high school. Superintendent Steve Thalheimer said the biggest changes students will see are in the curriculum. It’s being designed with post-high school in mind.

“Our goal is to really help students identify that and do a lot of that exploration and weeding things out so that they can make the best informed decision that they can for what they want to do post high school.”

In the next two school years students in middle schools will hear more about the freshman academy. All students will meet with counselors to choose their career pathways.

There are also construction projects ongoing at both schools. And designers are working on renovations to the Central High School building to turn it into the Freshman Academy.
