Firefighters Gather In Elkhart To Compete In International Competition

Firefighters from around the world will gather in downtown Elkhart this weekend to compete in the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge.

Professional firefighters dressed in full gear will compete in an obstacle course that includes climbing a five-story tower, dragging hoses, and rescuing a 175 pound dummy.

Individuals and teams with qualifying times can go on to compete in the world championships.

Geoff Crist, a competitor and member of the Elkhart Fire Department, said this competition will help the community understand the typical duties of a firefighter.

“Our men and women train hard and it’s impressive to see and I think for the citizens to see someone give an all out effort and see how taxing it really is,” he said.

The event begins at 5 p.m. on Friday and runs through Saturday.

It’s on High Street and is free and open to the public.
