Volunteers and workers at Hope Ministries in South Bend will provide nearly a thousand thanksgiving dinners for the holiday today.

Hope Ministries has been giving out thanksgiving dinners for 25 years. This year, they will serve just over 300 people at their facility and deliver more than 500 meals to people in need.

Steve Matteson is the director of ministry partnerships at Hope Ministries. He said the additional meals will go to people who usually get food assistance from other organizations in the area, but aren’t open on Thanksgiving.

“Hope and our whole army of volunteers have stepped in and provided thanksgiving meals specifically for those people who aren’t being served on Thanksgiving.”

Matteson said they don’t have any problems getting the volunteers they need to cook serve and deliver so many turkey dinners.

“There’s just a significant network around this whole community that is working awfully hard to meet the needs of those who have needs.”

Matteson said after the holiday they’ll go back to serving the usual 175 people they feed on a daily basis.
