https://www.in.gov/idoc/2410.htm

UPDATE:

Today Indiana State Police announced that a fellow inmate has been charged with murder in the death of Miami Correctional Facility inmate, Lannie Morgan of South Bend.

Phillip Sadler, age 53, is charged with Morgan's murder. Police say Sadler resided in the same cell house as Morgan, but was not his cellmate.

Police say an autopsy on Morgan showed that the cause of death was homicide by asphyxia due to smothering/occlusion of the nasal/oral cavities.

ORIGINAL POST:

Indiana State police say 70-year-old Lannie Morgan of South Bend was killed at the Miami Correctional Facility earlier this week.

According to documents maintained by the Indiana Department of Corrections, Morgan was sentenced to 30 years on an incest case out of Elkhart County back in 2011.

Here is the State Police news release:

Bunker Hill – Yesterday, Indiana State Police Detective Wendell Beachy initiated an investigation, at the request of the Miami Correctional Facility, into the death of inmate Lannie Morgan, 70, South Bend, IN.

At approximately 9:40 a.m., prison staff members found Morgan unresponsive in his I Unit cell. An ambulance was summoned for Morgan, but he died before reaching the local hospital. Investigators suspect foul play and are treating the death as a homicide.

An autopsy was conducted and results are pending.

Morgan had been incarcerated within the Indiana Department of Correction since December of 2011.

This is an active investigation. No further information will be released at this time.

Detective Beachy was assisted by ISP Detective Mike Lorona, internal affairs for the Miami Correctional Facility, and the Miami County Coroner’s Office.
