IPBS hiring part-time statehouse reporter

The network of Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations, IPBS, is seeking  a part-time, contractor/freelance journalist who can increase the depth of our legislative reporting.  The ideal candidate should have an understanding of Indiana state government, a passion for good storytelling, experience writing for broadcast and web under tight deadlines. 

The ability to juggle multiple stories on late nights during the legislative session is critical.  The ideal candidate must be able to write quickly and use sound news judgment to disseminate information and breaking  news using social media.  This position works directly with our full time statehouse reporter to cover daily news, identify big stories that warrant more in-depth coverage and spot developing trends. 

Minimum two years reporting experience.  Broadcasting experience is preferred. Knowledge of video equipment is desired.

Required:  Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, broadcasting, political science or related field required. 

Duties include:  covering the Indiana General Assembly, the governor and other state offices, participating in election coverage, developing story ideas that are of statewide interest. Producing feature stories outside of the legislative session and beyond the statehouse. Occasional in-state travel may be necessary.

Tony became WVPE's program director in 2022, after working as operations manager since 2014. He also produces Michiana Chronicles and works on other special programming and digital projects. He joined the station as All Things Considered host in 1997, hosted Morning Edition in 2000 and 2001, then returned to the ATC host chair from 2007 to 2016. One of his Morning Edition newscasts earned WVPE a Best Radio Newscast Award from the Associated Press in 2002. An Iowa native, Tony got his start in radio as a student at Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), Harrisonburg, Va., and managed the radio station there for three years after graduating. He also worked in commercial and Christian radio prior to his time at WVPE. Tony lives in Goshen.
