Juveniles Playing Ends With A 9-Year-Old Dead In South Bend From Apparent Gunshot Wound

A 9-year-old boy died in South Bend early Sunday morning from an apparent gunshot wound. New information released by officials indicates no adults were associated with the shooting. The discharge of the gunoccurred while juveniles were playing.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday morning, August 17th, in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

St. Joseph County – On August 16, 2020, at approximately 12:26 a.m., the South Bend Police Department was dispatched to the 1100 block of Rose St. in South Bend for an unknown emergency call. Upon the arrival of officers, they found a 9-year-old male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Medics arrived on the scene to render life saving measures; however, the victim did not survive and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit (CMHU) was called in to investigate, as per protocol. Investigators have conducted numerous interviews, are continuing to
process the scene and are continuing to investigate this case.
 

The victim has been identified as Tre’von Barnett, 9 years of age. The victim lived in the home with his mother and siblings.
 

No date for the autopsy has been set as of the time of this press release.
 

The Metro Homicide Unit has not made any arrests and no charges have been filed. The MHU is not seeking any suspect(s) currently.
