Local NPR Tiny Desk Contestant Takes A Day Off From Teaching In LaPorte To Open For Pitbull Tonight

Jennifer Weingart/WVPE

After the Pitbull concert at Four Winds Field in South Bend was cancelled in June and rescheduled for tonight, it provided an opportunity for Joe Ruiz and his band, Rhymer/Educator.  The teacher by day, rapper by night from LaPorte will be the opening act tonight. Many of you may have first become acquainted with Joe back in May when WVPE featured him as a local contestant in NPR's annual Tiny Desk Contest. Although he didn't win the contest, his group Rhymer/Educator went on to open for Vanilla Ice last month in LaPorte. As part of that effort, Joe conducted a Tiny Desk inspired contest of his own to give a student artist a shot at performing on a big stage.

The school year started in LaPorte on Wednesday. Ruiz is taking the day off from teaching today to prepare for tonight's concert.  There are still tickets available. Tickets can be purchased at the South Bend Cubs Box Office, online at www.pitbullsouthbend.com, or by calling 574-235-9988.

Fans who still have tickets from the original concert can exchange them at the Box Office for tickets to the new concert.
