Local Officials Concerned With Impact Of Large Protests On Coronavirus Spread

Annacaroline Caruso / WVPE Public Radio

Large groups have been gathering for protests in Michiana the past week to demand racial justice and police accountability. Some officials are concerned about what impact the large gatherings will have on the spread of COVID-19.

Hundreds of people have been holding demonstrations to protest police brutality. But keeping a distance of 6-feet from one another is almost impossible in that scenario, and not everyone has been wearing masks.

South Bend Mayor James Mueller says he’s proud residents are taking a stand against racial injustice, but asks people to remember the pandemic.

“With these demonstrations, we need people to stay safe," he says. "The outdoors is no panacea to preventing the spread of the virus.”

Officials say it’s critical for activists to wear face masks during the rallys and to wear them properly.

Officials recommend wearing a fitted mask that covers both the nose and mouth.

The warnings come as the South Bend Black Lives Matter chapter is planning a peaceful protest in front of the Morris Performing Arts Center tonight at 6 p.m.
