Local organisations to host democratic primary debates for 2nd congressional district

Two organizations in St. Joseph County will hold debates for the second congressional district Democratic primary and other contested races in the county this year.

Two debates and two meet the candidates forums are scheduled to be hosted by the American Democracy Project and the League of Women Voters of the South Bend Area in the coming months.

Elizabeth Bennion is the director of the American Democracy project and a professor of political science at IUSB. She said with primaries, voters can’t just vote using party cues so debates become a more important venue to compare candidates on the issues.

“Rather than simply relying on an ad you saw you can actually go and hear from the candidates and submit your questions and get those questions answered and find out where the candidates actually stand on the issues that matter most to you as a voter.”

Bennion said they will have more debates and forums coming up for other contested races, including St. Joseph County sheriff, and general election debates in the fall.

All three democratic congressional candidates; Pat Hackett, Mel Hall and Yatish Joshi, have confirmed they’ll participate in the debates.
