March Storms Hit Indiana And Michigan

SALEM, Ind. (AP) - The National Weather Service says it plans to survey storm damage in southern Indiana after high winds, hail and possible tornadoes swept across the state.

The weather service says a storm survey is planned Friday in northwest Washington County. In Bartholomew County, area residents took cover Thursday after tornado warning sirens sounded.  (Click to read more.)

The Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. held students at schools until the severe weather passed.

The storms left thousands of power customers without service and utilities worked Friday to restore power.

The weather service recorded a 60 mph (97 kph) wind gust at the Indianapolis International Airport.

It says damage from the storms included the roof ripped off a mobile home in Speedway near Indianapolis. It came as a late-winter storm system trekked across the Midwest.

Meantime in Michigan, authorities say a tornado swept through mid-Michigan, damaging homes and knocking out power to thousands.

The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado touched down at 7:03 p.m. Thursday around the Shiawassee County community of Vernon, about 21 miles (34 kilometers) southwest of Flint. Officials say the same tornado touched down in nearby Durand about 7:05 p.m.

State police say roughly 70 homes and businesses were damaged, but no injuries were immediately reported.

Severe weather also moved through nearby Genesee County, where a mobile home park was damaged. Park resident Eric Wichert said the winds "got really bad, really strong." Weather service officials say an unconfirmed tornado reportedly touched down nearby in the Flushing area at 7:12 p.m.

Lower Michigan also saw severe thunderstorm warnings, watches, flooding, high winds and hail as a late-winter storm system trekked across the Midwest.
