Top state law enforcement officials have announced the launching of an investigation into allegations against the Boy Scouts of America.
The Michigan Attorney General’s office and Michigan State Police are working to obtain information surrounding sex abuse allegations that came to light during recent civil litigation.
The Boy Scoutsof America organization filed for bankruptcy last year. The BSA is developing a compensationfund for thousands of men who claim to have been sexually abused as children by people affiliated with the scouts.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is asking for the public's help with the investigation.
“My department has proven our commitment to accountability through similar sex abuse investigations and I believe—with the public’s help—we can secure justice for survivors who endured abuse through Boy Scouts of America,” said Nessel.
Nessel’s office says anyone with information about the Boy Scouts of America may call the investigation hotline at 844-324-3374 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The tips can be left anonymously.
Michigan’s Attorney General’s office recently conducted a similar investigation into allegations involving Catholic priests. The two year investigation resulted in charges against nearly a dozen men.
A Boy Scouts of America spokesman says "The BSA is committed to supporting Michigan’s newly announced investigative efforts and will cooperate fully."
