Governor Gretchen Whitmer has rolled out proposals to address the excessive use of force by law enforcement. The plan calls for incentives for police officers to live in the communities where they work.

State law says local governments cannot require officers to live in the communities where they work.

Whitmer also endorsed legislation to create new rules for police departments. That includes banning chokeholds and “no-knock” search warrants – as well as audits to ensure police departments report all improper use of force violations.
