The St. Joseph County, Indiana Health Department released new data Friday on the breakdown of COVID-19 among different demographics.
African-Americans make up 15 percent of infected county residents. 51 percent of infected residents are White. There was a significant jump in confirmed COVID-19 cases among hispanics, making up 31 percent of the total.
Deputy Health Officer Mark Fox says that jump can be largely attributed increased access to testing.
More than 5,500 COVID-19 tests have been completed in St. Joseph County to date.
Data released by the county health department also show 29 percent of those hospitalized with COVID-19 are black, 18 percent are Hispanic, and 47 percent are white. Not all testing data includes demographic information.
Roughly half of COVID-19 related deaths in the county were white, 10 percent were Hispanic, and 40 percent of the deaths were among African- Americans.
