No Long Lines At Most South Bend & Elkhart Polling Places

Jennifer Weingart/WVPE

Not many cars were parked in the parking lot at Elkhart's North Side Gym. That is just one of the polling sites in the city where residents may vote today in municipal elections.

On the ballot for mayor are Republican Dave Miller and Democrat Rod Roberson. The current mayor, Republican Tim Neese, is not seeking reelection.

Three of the six Elkhart council districts are contested and three at large seats are up for a vote as well.

With today being municipal elections, voter turnout is likely to be lower than in Presidential or midterm years.

That didn't stop Barry McBride from voting in Elkhart today.

McBride says figuring out who to support and getting out to vote is more than a right.

"There's a lot of responsibility as a citizen of Elkhart to really just step up. And I'm glad I did," McBride says.

Listen to Annacaroline Caruso's report with voters in South Bend.

In South Bend, not much activity was evident outside this polling place on the city's northwest side. South Bend voters are choosing a new mayor. Current mayor Pete Buttigieg is not seeking reelection as he pursues a presidential bid. An official who served within the Buttigieg administration, Democrat James Mueller, is vying for the seat against Republican Sean Haas.

There are also council members on the ballot in South Bend.

Doug Michael grew up in the Michiana area but moved to Los Angeles for 25 years before returning recently. He hopes his vote will continue moving South Bend in a positive direction.

"I like the way the growth of the city has been going, so I don't want to see that go away. I would like to see some more improvements to downtown," Michael says.

Goshen and Mishawaka have incumbent mayors running unopposed.
