Northern Indiana AmeriCorps Members Sworn Into Service

Annacaroline Caruso/WVPE News

About 50 AmeriCorps members from northern Indiana were sworn into service  Tuesday morning.

AmeriCorps is a program that sends volunteers across the country to help with various community needs.

Among the AmeriCorps members sworn in - several were from South Bend.

The City’s AmeriCorps program has a few different goals - like the South Bend Green Corps which aims to create energy-efficient homes for low- income residents.

Amber Werner is the program director for South Bend’s AmeriCorps.

“When we can save residents money by reducing these costs and also we’re helping the environment at the same time, it’s that double win that we’re constantly looking for.”

Mayor Pete Buttigieg said the presence of AmeriCorps in South Bend will have a lasting impact on the community.

“Having these service members willing to literally roll up their sleeves, get involved, and make a difference, it makes our City more whole, it makes our families more healthy, and it makes South Bend stronger for the future.”

Today is the 25th anniversary of the AmeriCorps.
