Players Prepare For The U.S. Senior Open In South Bend

Michael Linville/WVPE

The 40th Annual U.S. Senior Open brings together 156 of the world’s best golfers over age 50.

The field includes 7 former U.S. Open champions, including Tom Watson, Tom Kite and Retief
Goosen and 10 former U.S. Senior Open Champions including Colin Montgomerie, Bernard
Langer and last year’s champion David Toms.

Toms played his first practice round Tuesday, and says he was surprised by the feel of the
course.

“What struck me is how mature the golf course is for being a fairly new golf course. And I don’t know if it’s the design, or just the overall look and the way the bunkering is, or if it’s the way the clubhouse is set back in the trees and it’s kinda dark. Just the whole place in general looks like it’s been here quite a while," Toms said.

Championship Director Steve Nieman says they’re expecting as many as 30,000 spectators each day over the weekend.

Tournament rounds begin Thursday. A winner will be crowned on Sunday.
