Protesters Say No to Indiana Enterprise Center

A group protested against a mega-industrial development west of South Bend at the City-County building and the County Council meeting last night.

The Indiana Enterprise Center would redevelop a large area between South Bend and New Carlisle. Twenty-two thousand acres that is now mostly farms.

Protestors from the Open Spaces and Agricultural Alliance of St. Joseph County say the land has already been developed...to grow food.

Catherine Osborne from South Bend said there’s already enough failed industrial land in the county. “Sometimes when I walk around these days I think we’re living in the ruins of the last mega-industrial complex.”

Council president Rafael Morton said they want better communication from the committee in charge of the IEC planning. “We would like to see better communication, more transparency because we continue to hear that, as these property owners and these farmers, basically one of their main concerns.”

The IEC has been in planning since late 2017. Supporters say it’s meant to draw industry and business into the county.
