Rainfall Causes Some Flooding in Michiana

Heavy rainfall over the last few days is causing some minor flooding in the area.

According to NOAA hydrology forecasts rivers in the area expected to crest on Thursday. Most will be in minor flooding territory, though the Elkhart River at Goshen is expected to crest with moderate flooding.

This means areas around rivers, low-lying areas and places near creeks are likely to see some flooding but widespread flooding, like that seen last spring, is unlikely.

The city of Elkhart is actively monitoring rivers and has closed the fishing pier at Island Park and the walking path at Studebaker Park out of caution. Sandbags are available at the Elkhart Street Department.

Mark Frazier is with the National Weather Service.

“For now, the good news is Friday, Saturday and Sunday looks to be dryer that what we’ve had this week so far.”

Frazier said more rainfall next week might cause more flooding, but it’s too early to accurately predict that.

The city of Goshen is also actively monitoring flooding and has closed parks and streets impacted by high water. Sandbags for residents are available at the Goshen Street Department.

Flooding amnesty shelter is available at Faith Mission in Elkhart.

Residents should avoid walking or driving through flood water.

The National Weather Service says at least 10 Marshall County roads also are closed because of high water.
