State Representative Jewell Jones has been released on a personal bond and ordered to submit to random drug and alcohol testing.

That’s after a probable cause hearing on Friday.

A magistrate determined there’s enough evidence for a case to proceed against the lawmaker – who is charged with drunk driving and resisting a police officer stemming from an April 6 crash along Interstate 96 in Livingston County. The 26-year-old Democrat from Inkster faces a charge of what’s sometimes called “super-drunk” driving. His blood alcohol content was measured at twice the legal limit.

Jones is also charged with having an open container of alcohol, possessing a weapon while intoxicated, and reckless driving.

The most serious charges are felony counts of resisting and obstructing police officers. That offense carries a maximum penalty of two years in jail.

Jones was arrested following a crash on I-96 near Fowlerville.

Jones is in his third term and cannot seek reelection. He’s the top Democrat on the House Military, Veterans and Homeland Security Committee.

A message seeking comment was left with Jones' office.
