The University of Michigan saw an increase in the number of sexual assaults reported on campus in 2018.
That's according to its Clery crime statistics report released this week.
The school reported 45 rapes in 2018 -- up from the 18 cases reported in 2017.
Heather Young is with the University's Division of Public Safety and Security.
She says national awareness raised by the #MeToo movement could be one reason for the increase.
“With increased awareness you have increased reporting,” Young said.
Young says victims have a number of avenues to report sexual assaults on campus, including directly to law enforcement or to Campus Security Authorities. That includes university housing staff, coaches, deans, or department heads.
“We also work very hard at the division to make it easier and more comfortable for people to report to law enforcement,” Young says.
Michigan State University listed the most rapes ever reported by a university on its annual Clery report. However, most of those were due to Larry Nassar, according to the report.
