Sexually Transmitted Diseases On The Rise In Michigan

Michigan health officials say sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise, nationally and statewide.

Earlier this month, Centers for Disease Control officials noted that STDs were at an all-time high across the U.S. in 2018.

Now, state officials are painting a clearer picture of what is happening in Michigan. In one year, Michigan saw a 10% increase in gonorrhea cases, a 36% increase in syphilis cases and a 1% increase in chlamydia cases.

Lynn Sutfin, a spokesperson with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is urging people to use proper protection and to get tested for STDs.

"Not using condoms, multiple partners, there has been little study of some of the dating apps that allow people to meet up quickly. All of those things are contributing to this increase we're seing across the country," Sutfin said.
