South Bend Schools And Transpo Partner To Provide Students With Free Rides

Annacaroline Caruso

South Bend Community Schools teamed up with the City’s bus service to provide free rides for students during the first semester of school.

South Bend high school students can ride any Transpo bus for free from August 15th to December 20th. All they have to do is show their student ID.

It’s meant to provide flexibility for students who have after-school jobs, sports, or need transportation on the weekend.

Charles Worsham, a junior at John Adams High School, said missing the school bus can mean missing class.

“I missed the bus one time and my mom couldn't take me so I actually just missed a whole day of school,” Worsham said.

Jim Seitz, the principle of John Adams said free Transpo rides will help students like Worsham and improve attendance rates.

“Our kids these days, they’re faced with a lot of issues, adult-style issues and so if we can have an opportunity to get our kids back to school so that way they can work on their education on a daily basis, that’s the number one goal here,” Seitz said.

This is an extension of the summer free ride program.
At the end of the first-semester, Transpo and SBCSC will decide whether or not to continue the program.
