Today on Stateside, we talk to Democratic congresswoman Elissa Slotkin, from Michigan's 8th congressional district, about the current tensions with Iran and the debate in the Democratic party over impeachment. Plus, two young women from Dearborn talk about the inspiration for their new podcast, which highlights the stories of Arab and Muslim women in the city.

  • The 2018 midterm election brought a lot of freshman political representatives to the U.S. House and Senate, including Democratic Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin, from Michigan’s 8th district. She discusses some of the bills she’s introduced since taking office in January, her push to get the Air Force to move faster on PFAS cleanup, and her views on whether or not President Trump should be impeached.

 


Attack in Windsor, plots in Detroit during WWI led to fear of German immigrants in the regionStateside’s conversation with Rachel Clark

  • In 1915, a Michigan man led a string of espionage, sabotage, and bombing attacks. Rachel Clark from the Michigan History Center shares the story of Albert Kaltschmidt, a German immigrant who posed a serious threat to Canadian national security, and was eventually convicted of conspiracy charges in a Michigan court.

  • A new podcast is sharing the stories and struggles of Arab and Muslim women in Dearborn. It’s called Dearborn Girl. Hosts Rima Fadlallah and Yasmeen Kadouh join Stateside to talk about what inspired them to make the podcast, and what they hope people in and outside of their city get out of listening to it.
  • Rima and Yasmeen were also tour guides for our latest episode of In Focus. It's Michigan Radio's new online-only project that explores places around the state that don’t usually get the spotlight. Digital producer Emma Winowiecki talks about how you can bring the project to your corner of the state. 

 


White nose syndrome creates an uphill battle for threatened, endangered bats in MichiganStateside’s conversation with Martin Vonhoff

 

  • Three of the nine bat species in Michigan fall under the category of endangered or threatened. This could lead to eventual extinction if nothing changes. Maarten Vonhof directs the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at Western Michigan University. He talks about the problems these bats face, including the deadly white nose syndrome, wind turbines, and habitat disruption.

 


Rep. Lawrence: It’s time for a national conversation on reparations

  • Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S. This year, Democratic lawmakers in Washington marked the occassion by holding a congressional hearing on reparations for slavery. Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence is a Democrat representing Michigan’s 14th congressional district. She talks about why she thinks it's time for the country to talk about reparations for slavery, and her response to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) dismissal of the idea.
