Suit Filed Against New Carlisle Over Wiretapping

Town of New Carlisle

Three former police department employees and a former town council member in New Carlisle have sued the town over alleged wiretapping in the police department and town hall buildings.

Plaintiffs Jeff Roseboom, Abby Moffitt, Patrick Cicero and Ron Colpitts allege that audio recording devices in the police department and town hall recorded their conversations without their knowledge or consent.

The suit said the devices were there because of the police chief, Calleb Dittmar and the deputy police chief Brian Thompson. Dittmar declined a request for comment.

The plaintiffs reportedly found out about the devices when people made references to conversations they were not present for.

Dan Pfiefer is representing the plaintiffs. He’s also involved in the wiretap suit against South Bend.

“One would think that with the wiretap case that’s been going on for seven years against the city of South Bend, anybody who reads the newspaper or listens to any news coverage would know that recording people’s conversations without thier consent or permission is a violation of the federal wiretap act and it’s also a violation of the state wiretap act.”

The plaintiffs are asking for ‘an amount adequate to compensate them for their loss’. The city has 20 days to respond.
