Many neighborhoods will be overrun tonight with goblins and ghouls and, the ever popular super hero.

Google’s annual ‘Frightgeist’ report on tending Halloween costumes is populated with the usual suspects; witches, clowns and animals. But a lot of the top getups are superheroes and their foes. Wonder Woman, Captain America, Batman, Harley Quinn and more.

Allen Stewart is the Director of the Hall of Heroes super hero museum in Elkhart. He said the costumes have gained in popularity since the 50s and 60s because of mass manufacturing.

“In the 60s they became a lot more popular with a company called the Ben Cooper Costume Factory and they did like the old ones,” Stewart said. “With like the plastic mask with like the rubber band on the back that was really hard to breathe through. They were really popular in the 60s through the 80s.”

Stewart said costumes have gotten better over the years. Recent releases of Marvel’s Avengers franchise and DC’s Wonder Woman have pulled the character popularity for Halloween up as well.

He says more people are getting into comic convention events and dressing up or ‘cosplaying’ as their favorite characters on nights other than Halloween as well.
