UPDATE: Damage Reports Come In After Apparent Funnel Cloud, Tornado Warning In St. Joe County

Jennifer Weingart/WVPE

UPDATE:

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say severe weather that moved through northern Indiana spawned a possible tornado in South Bend that damaged buildings and knocked down trees and power lines.

The National Weather Service received reports of a possible tornado as part of storms Sunday night, but it didn't immediately confirm a tornado.

No injuries were reported.

A building housing the Growing Kids Learning Center, a preschool and daycare facility in South Bend, was among those damaged.

Watch a video here of what appears to be a touchdown in Lakeville last night that was captured by one of our Facebook users.

ORIGINAL POST:

Many in Michiana were caught by surprise by a tornado warning issued Sunday night by the National Weather Service for a portion of St. Joseph County, Indiana.

And for some, the surprise was that the warning didn't come sooner. Emily McCracken was driving on the bypass near 331 in Mishawaka when she saw a funnel cloud. She says she called home and was told no warnings had been issued even though she could see a funnel.

She says five to ten minutes after that she did hear emergency sirens activated and got a warning on her phone and heard the warning on her radio.

Carrie Melissa Kaser also saw the funnel. She captured an image of it in the area of Fir Road between Day and McKinley in St. Joseph County.  She says, "I've never seen anything form like this in my life."

South Bend officials are reporting damage from the storm via Twitter.
