Walorski and Hall Invited to Public Debates

Political groups in Michiana are gearing up for 2nd congressional district debates that will include Mel Hall, and may include Jackie Walorski.

The American Democracy Project and the League of Women Voters sent invitations to Mel Hall and Jackie Walorski to three live debates and one televised debate.

Hall agreed to two live debates and the televised one. Walorski sent a reply saying she believes debates are important and expects invitations to others. The statement read in part “Once we receive all debate invitations, our campaign will review all requests in detail and inform sponsors of our decision.”

Two years ago Walorski ultimately declined the invitation.

Elizabeth Bennion is with the debate organizations. She said she would like to see Walorski choose differently this time.

“We would love to see this happen and sort of change that culture to make it an expectation for candidates to debate. So we remain, cautiously optimistic.”

Bennion said they would be happy to partner host with any other nonpartisan organizations that have not endorsed a candidate.

The debates are scheduled for September or October with the final decision being left up to Walorski, should she choose to accept the invitation.
