Baby boxes that allow people to anonymously leave newborns at firehouses have been added in two more Indiana cities, giving the state nearly 20 of the potentially life-saving devices.

A baby box was dedicated Sunday at the New Haven Fire Station in the city that's a few miles east of Fort Wayne.

Another baby box that was dedicated Monday at the Columbia City fire station became Indiana's 19th baby box.

The boxes are containers with a door to the outside of a fire station building.

ANGOLA, Ind. (AP) — A fire station in northeastern Indiana is the latest place for parents to safely drop off a newborn child.

A Safe Haven Baby Box was unveiled Monday in Angola. The fire station is just minutes from the Michigan border, which was a factor in the location. Before leaving office, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder last year vetoed a bill that would have allowed baby boxes.

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) — The founder and CEO of Safe Haven Baby Boxes says an infant has been safely left at a new baby box in northwestern Indiana.

Monica Kelsey says a baby girl was left Friday in the baby box at Hammond's Franciscan Health Hospital. The padded, climate-controlled box there opened Aug. 7.

Kelsey says hospital staff was notified as soon as the box's outside door was opened and retrieved the newborn within 90 seconds. The child has since been released from the hospital to the custody of the Indiana Department of Child Services
