DETROIT (AP) — The Michigan health department said Sunday that 11 new COVID-19 deaths were recorded in Michigan overall, though no new deaths were registered in Detroit for the day. The number of recorded deaths from COVID-19 in the state now stands at 4,891. The Detroit News reported that the 11 deaths reported Sunday is the lowest daily toll for Michigan since March 24. Detroit’s death toll stands at 1,257, with 22 new cases registered  Sunday.

Michigan Settles Suit After Landmark Right To Read Ruling

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The state of Michigan has announced a settlement in a lawsuit over poor reading skills that was filed on behalf of Detroit schoolchildren, weeks after a federal appeals court issued a groundbreaking decision recognizing a constitutional right to education and literacy. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the plaintiffs announced the agreement early Thursday. They say the settlement "will help secure the right of access to literacy for students in Detroit who faced obstacles they never should have faced." Details of the agreement will be released later Thursday.

Tesla Can Sell Vehicles In Michigan Under Legal Settlement

Tesla will be able to sell and service its vehicles in the back yard of Detroit's three automakers under a lawsuit settlement, a person briefed on the matter says.

DETROIT (AP) — The second Democratic presidential debates will be held July 30 and 31 in Detroit.

The Democratic National Committee announced the location Tuesday. It will be broadcast live on CNN.

Candidates will be assigned randomly to one of the two stages. Each night's debate will have up to 10 candidates who meet certain fundraising and polling thresholds. Additional details such as the venue and moderators will be announced later.

ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) - Officials say a woman allegedly tried to open an exit aboard a flight from Indianapolis to Detroit but was restrained by fellow passengers.

A spokeswoman for Detroit Metropolitan Airport says the woman may have been suffering from a medical issue and was restrained until the plane safely landed Monday night.

The woman was taken into custody, but the airport says a preliminary investigation suggests the woman didn't have criminal intent. The FBI is also investigating.
