Elkhart And Cummins Onan To Host Community Picnic

The City of Elkhart is teaming up with Cummins Onan to host a community picnic Friday in celebration of National Parks and Recreation Month. 

Community members can enjoy free activities, games, and picnic food at Eklhart’s Sterling Park between 5 and 8 p.m.

 

The Elkhart Municipal Airport received more than $1 million from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The money will go towards the second phase of construction for a new fence. It will extend underground to stop animals from digging under and it will be taller than the old fence.

 Elkhart Mayor Tim Neese said the new fence will have safety features that the old fence lacked.

Firefighters from around the world will gather in downtown Elkhart this weekend to compete in the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge.

 Professional firefighters dressed in full gear will compete in an obstacle course that includes climbing a five-story tower, dragging hoses, and rescuing a 175 pound dummy.   Individuals and teams with qualifying times can go on to compete in the world championships. 

Storms Hit Elkhart Wednesday Night

The storms that went through Elkhart around midnight Wednesday night were not a tornado. The National Weather Service says heavy tree damage and power outages was likely caused by straight line winds. 

An NWS Meteorologist says soil saturated by above-average rainfall this spring may have contributed to the trees that were uprooted by the storms. 

Steve Hart was working to clear branches out of his driveway and yard. But his big problem was an uprooted hundred-year-old walnut tree in his backyard. 

Solarize Elkhart Workshop Works to Educate on Solar Energy

The Elkhart Environmental Center is holding an workshop Thursday evening with information about going solar.

The event is part of the Solarize Elkhart Initiative. Similar projects have happened in Goshen and South Bend. Anyone who’s interested in learning how to convert their home or business to solar energy can attend. 

Groundbreaking For New Benham Avenue Apartments In Elkhart

The apartments will go up on the north-east corner of the Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary campus. Eleven one-bedroom units will house people referred by Oaklawn.

Mayor Neese to End Paint Program

Elkhart Mayor Tim Neese will not continue his ‘Kick-A Can’ paint program after he leaves office at the end of the year.

The ‘Kick-a-Can’ program donates exterior paint for houses and garages to people who can’t afford it otherwise. 

It’s a program Neese started when he was on city council in 1988, and continued during his time in the Indiana Legislature, and during the last four years while he’s been Mayor.

LATEST: Elizabeth Warren has finished her political stop in Elkhart before what appeared to be a packed venue at the RV/MH Hall of Fame.  Early on in her remarks she talked with the crowd about clean air, clean water and clean energy.

Young Eagles Give Kids the Chance to Fly

The Elkhart branch of the Experimental Aircraft Association is hosting a Young Eagles event on Saturday that allows kids to fly in small private aircraft.

 

Young Eagles is a national program meant to foster interest in aviation in kids. On Saturday any child between eight and 17 can sign up to ride in an airplane at the Elkhart Municipal Airport.

Kids also get to go up in the air traffic control tower and speak with engineers, mechanics, air traffic controllers and other professionals that make air travel work.

New Memory Care Center Opens in Elkhart

A new addition to the Hubbard Hill Living Wisdom Community in Elkhart,is a unique take on a village meant to help those in the midst of dementia who’ve lost their independence to live more freely.

The Center for Dementia Care modeled after a neighborhood. There are four houses in common local architecture styles; a tudor, a colonial, a craftsman, and a farmhouse. There are nine apartments in each house with 24-7 access to a central atrium.

The Elkhart Public Library is hosting a bilingual day of stories, dance and art on Sunday.

El dìa de los libros/El dìa de los niños or just Dìa is a celebration of childhood literacy regardless of language or cultural background. The American Library Association promotes the day annually.

This is the first year the Elkhart Public Library has hosted an event. Sam Householder with the library said it’s a way to bring the diverse communities of the city to the library.

Cities Host Events for Arbor Day

Cities around the area are celebrating this weekend for Arbor Day.

IUSB is hosting a zero waste breakfast this morning, Goshen has activities and tree giveaways this evening. Elkhart is hosting a full environmental event Saturday including a celebration for it’s 30 years of having a ‘Tree City USA’ designation.

The Lerner Theatre

An Elkhart elementary school is sending leftover food home with some students to help feed them on the weekends.

Woodland Elementary School in Elkhart has teamed up with South Bend-based food rescue nonprofit Cultivate to send eight individual frozen meals home with 20 students every Friday until the end of the school year.

Cultivate's Jim Conklin says it takes well-prepared food, combines it with other food and makes individual frozen meals out if it.

Vibrant Elkhart County Releases Progress Report

The Elkhart County Vibrant Communities Initiative reported on its progress Thursday.

The Vibrant Communities program is an placemaking initiative that works to bring together community members who have ideas on improving the county with other people who have similar ideas and with entities that can fund those plans.

Three years ago the initiative set out with 77 goals from improving broadband in the county to building parks and engaging young people. Of those 77, 52 are ongoing or completed.

At his State of the City address Tuesday night, Elkhart Mayor Tim Neese briefly addressed the issue that has become a defining part of his last year in office: the city’s police department.

Mayor Neese was introduced by the new chief of police he appointed in January. Chris Snider was named chief after the previous head of the department resigned following a South Bend Tribune and ProPublica report on disciplinary issues and abuses within the EPD last November.

Elkhart Mayor Tim Neese focused on economic development and infrastructure in his final state of the city Tuesday night.

 

Neese opened with a self-deprecating joke about the sparse attendance at the Lerner Theatre. Then he launched into the city’s economic development over his term in office.

“For every public dollar invested in the city, we have been able to leverage an addition $2.45 in private investment.”

Elkhart Announces Lineup for 32nd Annual Jazz Festival

Tickets are on sale now for the festival which runs June 21st through the 23rd. The 32nd annual festival features seven stages throughout downtown including two free ones.

Headliners are Gregory Porter for Friday night at the Lerner and The Hot Sardines for Saturday. Festival favorite Davina and the Vagabonds will open Saturday night.

Elkhart Funds Phase One of Central Plaza Redevelopment

Elkhart is moving forward on plans to re-create the Central Plaza area in the city’s downtown. The Elkhart Redevelopment Commission appropriated funding Tuesday night for the first phase.

For Elkhart’s Director of Development Services, the Central Plaza remodel is a passion project.  “I had already accepted a job six weeks ago but I said I have to stay until this meeting because I want to be sure this project moves forward.” Crystal Welsh said even though her last day is Friday, she’ll volunteer her time to make sure the project gets done.
