Elkhart opens new ADA compliant playground

The city of Elkhart cut the ribbon in its first Americans with Disabilities Act compliant playground.

The new playground at McNaughton park features artificial turf and wider walkways that make it easier for maneuvering wheelchairs. And a special enclosed pod for children on the autism spectrum who might become over stimulated in a group.

Elkhart Mayor Tim Neese said the road to the project has been a long one.

Mayor, Residents Discuss Future of Tolson Center

Mayor Tim Neese said he expected questions  about the Tolson Center at the Town Hall held on Monday at City Hall.
 

The City Council has been under scrutiny by some Elkhart residents, after allegations of secret meetings among republican council members in regards to budget cuts, that led to a proposal to lease the Tolson Center to Lifeline, a religious, community organization.
 

If the lease proposal goes through, Tolson would no longer be run by the city Parks department.

Three killed in Elkhart hit and run

Elkhart Police are still investigating a crash that left three people dead on Saturday.

The crash happened shortly after 9 on Beardsley Avenue near Cassopolis Street. A vehicle struck five pedestrians on the sidewalk, then veered back on the road, and hit two other vehicles.

One of the pedestrians died at the scene, while two others died at the hospital. One was treated and released and one is still in the hospital. No one in the other vehicles was injured.

Elkhart residents gather for solar eclipse

The solar eclipse peaked at about 2:20 this afternoon in the Michiana area.  About 150 people gathered in downtown Elkhart to witness the event. The Elkhart Public Library hosted a viewing party, where the public was welcome to join and watch live coverage of the eclipse on a jumbotron.

It’s been 38 years since the last eclipse. Kids and adults gathered at Central Park to witness what many called a “once in a lifetime event.”
